Ingredients
  

For the Crust

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Make sure it's well measured
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter, chilled and diced Chilled for best results
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Essential for flavor
  • 1/4 cup Ice water Add it gradually
  • 1 large Egg, beaten For egg wash

For the Filling

  • 4 cups Apples, peeled and sliced Use a mix of varieties for best flavor
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice Prevents browning of the apples
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Essential for warmth in flavor
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar For sweetness and depth

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Cut in 1/2 cup of chilled and diced unsalted butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture forms a ball.
  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Roll out the chilled dough into a 12-inch circle on a floured surface.
  • In a separate bowl, toss together the peeled and sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
  • Place the apple mixture in the center of your dough, leaving a 2-inch border.
  • Fold the edges of the dough over the apples, pleating it for a rustic look.
  • Brush the crust with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  • Let it cool slightly before slicing and serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Use a variety of apples for the best flavor. Don't skip the chilling process to ensure a flaky crust.
