Ingredients
  

For the beef marinade

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain Ensure to slice against the grain for tenderness.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce For beef marinade.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the main dish

  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or spaghetti) Spaghetti can be substituted if lo mein noodles are unavailable.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Divided into two portions.
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • to taste sesame seeds and green onions (for garnish)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Cook the lo mein noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  • In a bowl, toss sliced flank steak with 2 tablespoons soy sauce and cornstarch. Let marinate for 10-15 minutes.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over high heat. Add marinated beef and cook for 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  • Add remaining oil to the skillet. Stir-fry broccoli and bell pepper for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. Add garlic and ginger and stir for 30 seconds.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together low-sodium soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and sugar.
  • Add cooked noodles and beef back to the skillet. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together until well coated and heated through.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve hot.

Notes

You can present it in individual bowls or a large platter. Pair with extra soy sauce or chili sauce for additional flavor. For a vegetarian version, replace beef with tofu and use vegetable broth instead of oyster sauce. You can also customize with other proteins or vegetables as desired.
