Ingredients
  

Onion Rings

  • 2 large large onions Sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla are preferred.

Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beer (lager or stout) Lager gives a lighter flavor; stout adds richness.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Frying Oil

  • Enough oil (for frying) About 3-4 inches deep in pot.

Preparation

  • Peel the large onions and slice them into thick rings, about half an inch thick.
  • Soak the sliced onion rings in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes.

Batter Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Slowly pour in the beer while whisking until you achieve a smooth consistency.

Frying

  • Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Take the soaked onion rings out of the water, pat them dry, and dip them into the batter.
  • Carefully place several battered onion rings into the hot oil and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  • Use a slotted spoon to flip the rings halfway for even cooking.
  • Transfer fried onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  • Serve the warm onion rings with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or spicy ketchup.

Notes

For crispier onion rings, refrigerate coated rings for 15-20 minutes before frying. Ensure oil temperature is correctly monitored for optimal frying.
