Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup cold butter Use cold for a flaky texture.
  • 1 piece egg
  • 1 cup whole milk

Instructions

Preparation and Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cream of tartar.
  • Use a pastry cutter to cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add the egg and milk, mixing just until combined. Be careful not to over-mix, as this can make the biscuits tough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a generously floured surface and pat it out to about 3/4 to 1-inch thickness.
  • Use a biscuit cutter to cut out the biscuits and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Notes

For the best texture, use cold butter and avoid over-mixing the dough. Ensure the oven is fully preheated before baking.
