Ingredients
  

For the Dumplings

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored Other firm apples such as Honeycrisp or Fuji can also be used.
  • 1 package crescent roll dough (8 pieces) This creates a delightful flaky crust.

For the Caramel Sauce

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Adds richness to the dish.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Essential for that lovely caramel flavor.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Enhances the sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Gives a warm hug-like aroma.
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Adds a cozy, warming spice.
  • 1 cup apple cider or soda (such as Sprite) Keeps the dumplings moist and adds flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the overall flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Wash and cut the apples into eight equal wedges.
  • Unroll the crescent roll dough and wrap each apple wedge, pinching the edges to seal.
  • Arrange wrapped apple wedges in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

Make the Caramel Sauce

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  • Stir in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and bubbly.
  • Add the vanilla extract to the caramel and stir well.

Bake the Dumplings

  • Pour the caramel sauce over the apple wedges in the baking dish.
  • Pour the apple cider or soda around the dumplings.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  • Let cool slightly before serving, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For a crunchier topping, sprinkle chopped nuts over the dumplings before baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat in the oven before serving.
