Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa or Hershey's Special Dark cocoa
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe bananas (approximately 1 1/2 cups mashed) Make sure they are very ripe for best flavor.
  • 1 cup buttermilk or 8 oz sour cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Chips

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided About 3/4 cup mixed into the batter, remaining for topping.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until smooth, then whisk in the buttermilk (or sour cream), granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until creamy.
  • Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Gently stir in about 3/4 cup of chocolate chips.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the greased loaf pan, spreading evenly. Top with remaining chocolate chips.
  • Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  • Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature. Pairs well with coffee or tea. Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to three days or in the fridge for up to a week. Can be frozen for up to three months, just slice before freezing. For variations, consider adding chopped nuts or spices like cinnamon.
