Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Gives the cookies that lovely chewy texture.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Helps the cookies rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Works with baking soda for a soft cookie.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Adds richness and flavor.
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar Provides sweetness and structure.
  • 1 large egg Binds the ingredients.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds a warm essence.
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Provides depth of flavor.

Finishing Touch

  • 3/4 cup red and green sprinkles Adds festive colors and crunch.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  • Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until mixed.
  • Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls. Chill if sticky.
  • Roll each ball in the festive sprinkles.
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheets, leaving 2 inches apart.

Baking

  • Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes until edges are golden but centers are soft.
  • Allow to cool on the sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

To make softer cookies, take them out of the oven 1-2 minutes early. Optional: add zest from an orange or lemon for a twist.
