  • 3 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, firm, sliced thinly Aim for about 1/8 inch thick slices.
  • 2 medium onions, sliced thinly Shallots can also be used.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Brings depth of flavor.
  • 2 cups cream or milk (or a mix of both) Cream makes it indulgent.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary), chopped Balance the richness with freshness.
  • to taste salt Season generously.
  • to taste fresh ground black pepper Enhances flavors.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and slice your potatoes thinly.
  • Slice your onions into thin rings.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter and sauté the onions until translucent.
  • Add minced garlic to the onions and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in cream (or milk), chopped herbs, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for a couple of minutes.

Assembly and Baking

  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and pour half of the creamy mixture over them.
  • Repeat the layering process with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  • Sprinkle more herbs on top before covering the dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake covered for about 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and potatoes are tender.
  • Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a crispy top, consider broiling it for a few minutes after baking. You can add cheese like Gruyère or cheddar for a cheesy twist. A sprinkle of paprika before baking adds color and flavor.
