  • a dash none cayenne pepper For extra heat.
  • 1/2 cup ketchup Sweetens the sauce.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Adds complex flavor.
  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar Enhances sweetness.
  • 2 cups water Adjusts consistency.
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce For those who like it spicy.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Heat the canola oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Sprinkle in the grated onion and minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the tomato paste and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef, breaking it up and incorporating it well.
  • Sprinkle in the chili powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper. Stir well.
  • Pour in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and water. Mix well.
  • Use a potato masher to ensure an even texture.
  • Allow to simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Finally, stir in the hot sauce to finish.

Notes

Adjust the spice levels to your preference. Serve over grilled or boiled hot dogs, and pair with classic sides like coleslaw or potato chips.
