Coating Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour This is the magic ingredient to create that crispy coating.
  • 1 teaspoon salt A little salt enhances all the flavors beautifully.
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper Freshly ground is best for that extra kick!
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika This adds a lovely color and a subtle smokiness.
  • Cooking spray or oil A little is all you need to get that golden crunch without the grease!

Preparation

  • Soak the onions in buttermilk (optional) for about 10 minutes.
  • While the onions soak, mix together the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika in a bowl.
  • Drain the onions well and toss them into the flour mixture until evenly coated.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Arrange the coated onions in the air fryer basket in a single layer, giving them space to crisp.
  • Air fry the onions for around 10-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through for even cooking.
  • Remove from fryer and let cool for a minute before serving.

Notes

To achieve maximum crispiness, do not skip soaking the onions in buttermilk. Optionally, add garlic powder or your favorite dried herbs to the flour mixture for extra flavor. Keep an eye on the onions while cooking to prevent burning.
