For the Rouladen

  • 6 slices Thin slices of top round steak Tender cut perfect for rolling.
  • 1/2 cup Spicy brown mustard Adds tanginess to the filling.
  • 12 slices Bacon Smoky flavor enriches the rouladen.
  • 6 slices Pickles Provides crunch and sourness.
  • 1 medium Onion Adds sweetness to the stuffing.
  • 2 cups Beef gravy For smothering the rouladen.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients on the counter.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Pat dry the top round steak slices with a paper towel.
  • Spread spicy brown mustard over each slice of steak.
  • Place strips of bacon on top of the mustard.
  • Add thin slices of pickles and onion on top.
  • Roll the steak from one end to the other and secure with kitchen twine or toothpicks.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Brown the rouladen in the skillet until nicely browned on all sides.
  • Transfer the browned rouladen to a baking dish.
  • Pour beef gravy over the rouladen, ensuring they are well covered.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 2 hours, or until fork-tender.

Serving

  • Remove rouladen from oven and let rest for a few minutes.
  • Carefully remove twine or toothpicks and slice into rounds.
  • Serve warm with extra gravy if desired.

Notes

To enrich the flavor, consider adding melted butter or a splash of red wine to the gravy. Don't rush the browning step for optimal flavor.
