  • 3 cloves Garlic Aromatic and flavorful.
  • 2 cans Canned white beans Makes the soup creamy and rich.

Spices and Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Salt To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme Common pantry spice.
  • a pinch Crushed red pepper For a bit of heat.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Chop the onion, celery, and carrots into small, even pieces.

Cooking

  • In a large pot over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil and sauté the chopped onion, celery, carrots, and minced garlic for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the bone-in ham steak to the pot and cover it with enough water or broth.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 30 minutes.
  • Stir in the canned white beans and spices, simmering for an additional 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove the ham steak, shred the meat off the bone, and return it to the pot.
  • Taste the soup and adjust seasoning if needed.
  • Ladle the warm soup into bowls and serve.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use homemade chicken or vegetable broth instead of water. This dish pairs well with crusty bread or cornbread. Leftovers can be stored for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator.
