Ingredients
  

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef This is the star of the show! Tender and flavorful.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Helps bind the meat together; can substitute with crushed crackers or oats.
  • 1 egg Another binder that adds moisture.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped Brings sweetness to the mixture.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Simple seasoning to elevate flavors.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Used for frying the patties.

For the Gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth Adds rich flavor to the gravy.
  • 1 cup onions, sliced Caramelized for added sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons flour Thickens the gravy.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami flavor.

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly.
  • Shape the meat mixture into equal-sized patties, about half an inch thick.

Cooking

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers.
  • Cook the patties in the hot oil for about 5-6 minutes on each side until browned and cooked to your liking.
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat until soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to combine. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce and let the mixture come to a gentle simmer.
  • Return the cooked hamburger patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.

Serving

  • Serve the Hamburger Steak and Gravy hot with extra gravy on top. Pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or bread.

Notes

For crispy patties, chill them in the fridge for 30 minutes before cooking. Feel free to add mushrooms sautéed with onions for extra flavor.
