  • 4 cups all-purpose flour You can substitute with bread flour for a chewier texture.
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 2 cups warm water Ensure the water is warm but not hot.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and yeast.
  • Add the warm water and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise for 12-18 hours at room temperature.

Baking

  • After it rises, preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a Dutch oven inside to heat.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a ball. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven, place the dough inside, cover it, and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
  • Let the bread cool before slicing.

Notes

Homemade crusty bread can be served on its own, with butter, or used for sandwiches. Store it in a kitchen towel or paper bag at room temperature for up to two days, or freeze slices for up to three months. Don't rush the rising time for better flavor and texture.
