Ingredients
  

Cake Batter

  • 1.25 cups hot water Essential for creating the gooey fudge layer.
  • 1.5 cups sugar, divided Prevent from mixing all at once; some is used for sprinkling.
  • 1 cup flour
  • 0.75 cups cocoa, divided Again, separate for batter and topping.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups milk
  • 0.33 cups butter, melted
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla
  • 0.5 cups brown sugar

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Boil the water and set it aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3/4 cup sugar, flour, 1/2 cup cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla to the bowl. Mix well.
  • Spray a 9-inch or an 11×7 baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, remaining cocoa, and brown sugar. Stir to mix thoroughly.
  • Sprinkle this mixture over the chocolate batter in the baking dish.
  • Carefully pour the hot water over the top, but do not stir it in.

Baking

  • Bake at 350 degrees F for about 35 minutes or until the center is set.
  • Let the cake stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for best experience. Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days.
