  • 1 medium Onion, chopped Sauté until translucent.
  • 28 ounces Canned diced tomatoes Includes juices for a richer sauce.
  • 1 cup Fresh basil, chopped Add at the end for freshness.
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated For serving.
  • To taste Salt and pepper Adjust according to preference.

Cooking Steps

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the fusilli pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve a cup of pasta water and drain the rest.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, drizzle in the olive oil and add the Italian sausage. Cook until golden brown and slightly crispy, breaking apart the sausage with a wooden spoon.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
  • Add the canned diced tomatoes with their juices to the skillet and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Once the sauce has thickened, add the cooked pasta to the skillet and pour in a little reserved pasta water, mixing thoroughly until creamy.
  • Fold in the fresh basil gently, and ensure everything is well combined.
  • Serve the pasta in bowls and finish with generous shavings of Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Use high-quality Italian sausage for the best flavor. You can add red pepper flakes or crushed black pepper for an extra kick.
