Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour For best results, use a kitchen scale for measuring.
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt Adjust to taste.
  • 0.5 teaspoon instant yeast Regular yeast can be used if activated in warm water first.
  • 1.5 cups warm water The temperature of the water is important for proper yeast activation.

Instructions
 

Mixing Dough

  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, and yeast.
  • Add warm water and stir until a sticky dough forms.

Resting Dough

  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 18 hours.

Baking

  • After the resting period, preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Place a Dutch oven (with the lid) in the oven to preheat for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a ball.
  • Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven from the oven, and place the dough inside.
  • Cover with the lid and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool before slicing.

Notes

Wrap the bread in a clean kitchen towel and store at room temperature for best freshness. Freeze slices for longer storage. Experiment with additional herbs or spices for different flavors.
