  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Fresh vanilla extract is recommended.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture turns light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Mix in the vanilla extract until combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes.
  • Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean.

Cooling

  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the cakes to wire racks to cool completely.

Serving

  • Slice and serve the Old Southern Cake as is or frosted with your favorite icing.
  • Pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful treat.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for a couple of days. You can freeze slices wrapped in plastic wrap for up to three months. Customize with flavors like lemon zest or chocolate chips.
