  • 8 slices Rye bread Marbled rye preferred for color and flavor.
  • 8 oz Turkey slices Deli-style, smoked variety recommended for depth of flavor.
  • 1 cup Coleslaw Store-bought or homemade depending on preference.
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Can substitute with provolone or sharp cheddar.
  • 4 tbsp Thousand Island dressing Russian dressing can be used as an alternative.
  • 4 tbsp Butter For grilling the sandwich.

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients and tools, including a skillet, spatula, and knife.
  • Preheat your skillet over medium heat.

Cooking

  • Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  • On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer turkey slices, then coleslaw, and top with a slice of Swiss cheese.
  • On the unbuttered side of another slice, spread a generous layer of Thousand Island dressing.
  • Carefully place the slice with the dressing on top of the fillings, butter side up.
  • Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  • Flip the sandwich and cook the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes, pressing lightly with a spatula.
  • Remove the sandwich from the pan, let it rest for a minute, then slice in half.

Notes

Keep an eye on the heat to achieve an extra crispy exterior without burning. Serve with potato chips or a light garden salad for a complete meal.
