Ingredients
  

For the Pastries

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed Use chilled puff pastry for easier handling.
  • 1/2 pound ground sausage, cooked and crumbled Can substitute with chicken, turkey, or meatless sausage.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese Opt for mozzarella for a milder taste or cheddar for sharpness.
  • 1 large egg, beaten For egg wash.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or parsley, chopped Optional, but adds flavor.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Enhances flavors.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Cook the ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned; drain excess fat.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, shredded cheese, salt, pepper, and herbs (if using). Mix well.
  • Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into rectangles, approximately 3x4 inches.
  • Place a tablespoon of the sausage and cheese mixture in the center of each pastry rectangle.
  • Fold the pastry over the filling and press the edges with a fork to seal.
  • Brush the tops of the pastries with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

These pastries are best served warm and can be paired with a dipping sauce like honey mustard or spicy marinara. They can also be made ahead and frozen before baking.
