  • 4-5 medium Potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet) Thinly sliced
  • 2 cups Ham (diced) Can use leftover or ready-cooked ham
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1-2 cups Cheddar cheese (shredded) Reserve some for topping
  • 3 tablespoons Butter For making the roux
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose flour For thickening the sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • Fresh parsley For garnish

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Butter a large baking dish (about 9x13 inches).
  • Slice the potatoes thinly (about 1/8-inch thick).
  • Dice the ham into bite-sized pieces.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, and cook for about a minute until golden.
  • Gradually add heavy cream and milk, whisking until smooth and bubbling. Stir in onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Fold in most of the cheese, reserving some for topping.

Assembly

  • Layer sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
  • Add a layer of diced ham followed by a generous amount of the cheese sauce.
  • Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with sauce on top.
  • Sprinkle the reserved cheese on the top layer.

Baking

  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for another 30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let the dish rest for about 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for better flavor. Allowing the dish to rest helps it hold together. For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or spinach.
