  • 4 cups Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups Smoked ham, diced
  • 2 cups Sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Thyme (optional) Adds extra flavor
  • 1/2 cup Bread crumbs (for topping, optional) Adds crunchy texture
  • 2 tbsp Butter (for greasing)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of butter.
  • Slice your Yukon Gold potatoes into thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick).

Layering

  • Layer half of the potato slices in a single layer at the bottom of the dish.
  • Sprinkle half of the smoked ham, half of the chopped onion, and half of the minced garlic evenly over the potatoes.
  • Sprinkle half of the sharp cheddar cheese on top.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining potato slices, ham, onion, garlic, and cheese.

Creamy Mixture and Baking

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, salt, black pepper, and thyme (if using).
  • Pour the creamy mixture over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
  • If using breadcrumbs, sprinkle them evenly over the top layer.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Serving

  • Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Using Yukon Gold potatoes is key for creaminess. Try adding fresh herbs or nutmeg for extra flavor. Let it rest after baking for the best results.
