  • 1 cup grits This is the heart of the dish, giving it that comforting, cozy texture.

For the Shrimp

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined Fresh shrimp bring a sweet and briny flavor.
  • 1/2 cup diced bacon or sausage Adds a crispy, savory kick.
  • 1 small onion, diced Brings sweetness and depth.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Must for aromatic flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for seasoning.
  • Chopped green onions for garnish Adds a pop of color and fresh taste.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a pot, bring 4 cups of water or chicken broth to a boil.
  • Slowly whisk in 1 cup of grits and reduce the heat.
  • Stir constantly until the grits thicken, about 20-25 minutes.
  • Once thickened, stir in 1 cup of shredded cheese and 1/4 cup of butter until melted.
  • Meanwhile, in a skillet, cook 1/2 cup of diced bacon or sausage until crispy and set aside.
  • Sauté 1 small diced onion and 2 cloves minced garlic in the same skillet until soft.
  • Add 1 pound of shrimp, season with salt and pepper, and cook until pink, about 4-5 minutes.

Serving

  • Spoon the creamy grits onto your plates, top with sautéed shrimp, and finish with crispy bacon or sausage.
  • Sprinkle some chopped green onions on top for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

Use fresh shrimp for the best flavor. Experiment with different types of cheese. Adjust seasoning to personal taste.
