Ingredients
  

Meat

  • 2 pounds round steak This cut is perfect because it becomes incredibly tender during the slow cooking process.

Broth and Sauces

  • 1 cup beef broth Adds depth and richness to the gravy.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Enhances the umami flavor in the dish.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce A classic flavor booster.

Vegetables

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms Brings an earthy flavor that complements the beef beautifully.
  • 1 onion, sliced Adds sweetness and aroma.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Adds a wonderful savory note.

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential to bring out the flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper A dash of heat to balance the rich gravy.
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme Adds a lovely herbal aroma.

Thickening (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons flour If you like a thicker gravy.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Season the round steak with salt and pepper, rubbing the spices in well.
  • In a large skillet, heat a splash of oil over medium heat and brown the round steak on both sides for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Transfer the steak to the slow cooker.
  • In the same skillet, sauté the onions and minced garlic until soft and translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the mushrooms and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Cooking

  • Pour the beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and sprinkle in the thyme over the sautéed mixture and stir to combine.
  • Pour the mixture over the round steak in the slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours.
  • If desired, mix flour with a little cold water to form a slurry and add it to the slow cooker 30 minutes before serving to thicken the gravy.
  • Slice the round steak and serve it smothered in gravy.

Notes

Serve with fluffy mashed potatoes, creamy polenta, green beans, or roasted carrots. Leftovers can be refrigerated for 3-4 days or frozen for 2-3 months.
