Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage, chopped Cabbage is the star of this dish, giving it that nice crunch and a subtle sweetness when cooked down.
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped Bacon brings that smoky flavor that really makes this dish shine.
  • 1 onion, diced A little onion goes a long way in making this dish aromatic and flavorful.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic adds a kick that elevates the whole recipe.
  • to taste salt and pepper Simple seasonings that you probably already have in your pantry!
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika This is where the 'smoky' flavor really comes from!
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil A splash of olive oil helps everything sauté nicely and adds a little richness.
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar This brightens up the flavors and gives the dish a subtle tang.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Chop the cabbage, dice the onion, and mince the garlic.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat the pan over medium heat and add the chopped bacon. Cook it until it’s crispy and golden brown. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside, keeping the bacon grease in the skillet.
  • In the same skillet, add the diced onion. Sauté the onion until it’s nice and translucent, usually about five minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and let it cook for about a minute, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  • Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir. Allow it to cook for about ten minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once your cabbage starts to wilt, season it with smoked paprika, salt, and pepper, mixing well.
  • Drizzle in the olive oil and apple cider vinegar, then toss everything to combine. Cook for another five minutes until the cabbage is tender.
  • Add in the crispy bacon, toss well, and serve hot.

Notes

For crispy bacon, don't overcrowd the pan. Try using savoy cabbage for a sweeter flavor. Best served alongside roasted chicken or grilled sausages.
