Cooking Oils and Basics

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Neutral oil for frying.
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil Adds rich, nutty flavor.

Aromatics

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Brings wonderful aroma and depth of flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced Adds warmth and spice.
  • 1-2 pieces red chili peppers, sliced Adjust for spice preference.

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Essential for savory flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar Adds tanginess.
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or brown sugar Adds sweetness.

Finishing Touches

  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds For garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Press the tofu using a tofu press or wrap it in a kitchen towel and place a heavy skillet on top for about 30 minutes.
  • Cube the pressed tofu into bite-sized pieces and toss with cornstarch until evenly coated.

Cooking

  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until hot.
  • Fry the coated tofu for 5-7 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
  • Push the tofu to one side and add sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, and sliced chili peppers to the other side. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, and maple syrup or brown sugar. Toss everything together to coat the tofu well.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped cilantro before serving.

Notes

Ensure the oil is hot before adding tofu and avoid overcrowding the pan for a crispy finish. Customize with additional veggies like bell peppers or broccoli for added nutrition.
