For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 cups mushrooms (sliced) Fresh mushrooms add an earthy flavor.
  • 2 tbsp butter For additional flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced) Adds a wonderful aroma.
  • 1 cup beef broth Forms the base of the gravy.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream For luxurious creaminess.
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 tbsp water for a slurry) Helps to thicken the gravy.

For the Creamy Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes (peeled and cubed) For creamy mashed potatoes.
  • 1/2 cup milk Makes the mash creamy.
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream For smooth texture.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter For extra creaminess.

Instructions

Preparation of Mashed Potatoes

  • Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
  • Drain the potatoes and mash with milk, cream, butter, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  • Keep the mashed potatoes warm while preparing the other components.

Cooking the Steaks

  • Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper.
  • Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side for a medium-rare finish.
  • Remove the steaks and let them rest to allow the juices to redistribute.

Making the Mushroom Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt the 2 tbsp of butter and sauté the sliced mushrooms until golden brown.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Pour in the beef broth and heavy cream, bringing the mixture to a simmer.
  • Stir in the cornstarch slurry to thicken the gravy, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Assembling and Serving

  • Plate the steaks alongside a generous serving of creamy mashed potatoes.
  • Spoon the mushroom gravy over the steaks and mashed potatoes.

Notes

Feel free to add garlic or cheddar cheese to the mashed potatoes for a delightful surprise. For best results, don't overcrowd the skillet when cooking the steaks.
