Ingredients

For the meat mixture

  • 450 g ground beef Use lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 240 ml chicken broth
  • 30 ml steak sauce
  • 15 ml Dijon mustard
  • 30 g unsalted butter
  • 225 g mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 140 g white onion, coarsely chopped
  • 5 ml Montreal steak seasoning
  • 16 g all-purpose flour Sprinkle over vegetables.

For serving

  • 8 regular-size burger buns toasted
  • 60 g sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded Use different cheese for variations.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together chicken broth, steak sauce, and Dijon mustard. Set aside.

Cooking

  • Heat a 30 cm skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook for 7–8 minutes, stirring frequently, until fully browned. Drain excess fat and transfer beef to a plate.
  • Add butter to any remaining drippings in the skillet. Add sliced mushrooms, chopped onion, and steak seasoning. Sauté for 7–8 minutes until onions are translucent and mushrooms are golden.
  • Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook, stirring constantly, for 1–2 minutes until the flour is browned and emits a nutty aroma.
  • Return the browned beef to the skillet. Pour in the prepared broth mixture and stir. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the mixture thickens to a rich consistency.

Assembly

  • Spoon approximately 80 ml of meat mixture onto the base of each toasted burger bun.
  • Top each with 1 tablespoon shredded Cheddar cheese, then cover with the top bun. Serve immediately.

Notes

Serve these sloppy joes hot, right after you make them. They are great on their own or with a side of potato chips or a simple salad. Offer extra toppings like pickles or hot sauce for added flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for about 3 days.
