Ingredients

Filling Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 2 cups Cabbage, chopped Fresh cabbage recommended.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Thyme

Dough

  • 2 pounds Yeast dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg Egg wash, beaten For brushing the tops.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Chop your onion and cabbage, and gather all your ingredients to have everything ready.

Cooking the Filling

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef for about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  • Add the chopped onions and cook until they are soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir in the chopped cabbage and cover the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the cabbage wilts down.
  • Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme, mixing well and cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Dough Preparation

  • If using store-bought dough, let it come to room temperature. If making your own, prepare as desired.
  • On a floured surface, roll out your dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into squares, around 4-6 inches on each side.
  • Place a spoonful of the beef and cabbage filling in the center of each square.
  • Fold the corners of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal.

Baking

  • Place the Runzas seam-side down on a greased baking sheet and brush the tops with the beaten egg.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Serving

  • Let the Runzas cool slightly after baking, then serve warm.

Notes

You can customize the filling with other ingredients like cheese or mushrooms. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat in the oven for best texture.
